What is Income Tax?

Income tax is a tax charged on the annual income of an individual or business earned in a financial year. The Income Tax system in India is governed by The Income Tax Act, 1961, which lays out the rules and regulations for income tax calculation, assessment, and collection.



Who needs to pay Income Tax?

Companies, Corporate Firms, Bodies of Individuals (BOI), local authorities, associations of persons (AOPs), and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) should pay income tax. Besides, if your gross income is above the mark of 2.5 lakhs, you should file your Income Tax Returns every year



How to respond to income tax demand?

Log in to e-Filing portal and click Pending Actions > Response to Outstanding Demandand you will be taken to Response to outstanding demand page. If there are demands outstanding against your PAN, the current status against each of the past / existing outstanding demands will be updated as Pending payment / Response.



How to check demand status of income tax?

Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal homepage. Step 2: Click Income Tax Return (ITR) Status. Step 3: On the Income Tax Return (ITR) Status page, enter your acknowledgement number and a valid mobile number and click Continue. Step 4: Enter the 6-digit OTP received on your mobile number entered in Step 3 and click Submit.

What happens if I get income tax notice?

Normally you get up to 15 days to respond to the query and you can meet your Assessing Officer and close it out. However, in case you do not respond your return may be declared invalid and could also invite penalty and interest on delayed payment of tax. You can also respond online to the notice.



What is TDS?

TDS or Tax Deducted at Source is an income tax that is collected from certain payments like rent, salary, commission, interest, professional fees, etc. The person paying the amount should deduct TDS from such a payment.



Is TDS Refundable?

A TDS Refund arises when the taxes paid by way of TDS are greater than the actual tax payable calculated for the Financial Year. It is calculated after consolidating income earned from various sources. We all, as taxpayers, are categorized under various tax slabs



Difference between income as shown in AIS and 26AS?

Income reflected in AIS and 26AS are based on information received from different sources and tax compliance made by different stakeholders. These are made available to the Taxpayer for reference purpose. Taxpayer should check his book of records and provide information in the return as per the information available with him.

If there is variation between the TDS/TCS or tax payments as provided in Form26AS and the TDS/TCS or tax payments provided in AIS, the Taxpayer may rely on the TDS/Tax payment information provided in 26AS for the purpose of filing of tax return and for computing Pre-paid Taxes.
